Let's Debate: Leading England to global greatness

Brass Bands England has appointed Kenneth Crookston as its new CEO. Nicola Bland charts his career to date and probes him about his vision for making England a global leader in banding again by building the ‘highest and widest pyramid in the banding world.’

Probed about his future vision and plans for Brass Bands England, Kenneth Crookston revealed: “BBE’s four-year business plan, approved earlier this year by the BBE Trustees and Arts Council England, stresses the organisation’s desire to be a global leader in its chosen field. I can see no more important starting point because that aspiration ensures that quality will be at the forefront of all of BBE’s activities as it strives to build the foundations for England’s brass bands to return to their natural position as the best in the World. In the face of stern competition from Norway, Switzerland, Belgium and plenty
of others, this can only be achieved through professional infrastructure, focused development and purposeful events. In other words, we need to build the widest pyramid in the banding world, as well as the highest, but it won’t be completed overnight!
